Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Energy and Environmental Management - Developing Countries

The aim of the master’s degree program at Europa-Universität Flensburg in Energy and Environmental Management at Europa-Universität Flensburg is to train students to work as a professional in the energy sector. In particular, it will enable you to:

• Identify and analyze energy and environmental problems
• Facilitate and manage the process of sustainable problem-solving

Apart from the subject-specific competences, this program teaches the following specific key competences:

• The ability to recognize problems and solutions in their entirety
• Creativity and openness to innovation
• The ability to think and communicate in interdisciplinary, intercultural ways
• The ability to work in a team, and to lead and motivate teams

The study program is accredited by the Accreditation Agency for Study Programmes in Engineering, Informatics, Natural Sciences and Mathematics (ASIIN e.V.).

The Energy and Environmental Management in Developing Countries major consists of three specializations:

Business Administration and Energy Economics:

Students in both of the specialization areas take the compulsory modules "Foundations of Sustainable Energy Systems" and "Environmental Economics."  They give students a basic knowledge and understanding of the macroeconomic interrelationship between environmental and energy problems. All other modules are tailored to fit the needs of students in both areas of specialization.

Project Management:

The compulsory module "Project Management in International Development Cooperation/Project Management in International Development Cooperation" teaches basic skills in planning and steering development projects. Optional modules in "International Organizations and Development Strategies" and "Quality Management in Projects" allow students to gain expertise in a specific area.

Renewable Energy and Energy Planning:

In Engineering, students must pass two required modules in the subject of Energy Planning:

• Sustainable Energy Planning in Rural Areas/Sustainable Energy Planning in Rural Areas
• Applied Informatics in Energy Planning/Applied Informatics in Energy Planning

All students must choose to take two of the following four modules:

• Renewable Energy I/Renewable Energy I,
• Renewable Energy II/Renewable Energy II
• Rational Use of Energy/Rational Energy Use
• Minigrids

This allows participants to specialize in accordance with their individual interests and the needs of the countries they are studying.

This degree program awards the degree of Master of Engineering in Energy and Environmental Management (Industrial Engineering). This degree entitles the holder to use the title of "Wirtschaftsingenieurin/Wirtschaftsingenieur"( "Industrial Engineer"), which is a legally protected title in Germany

The program qualifies you to hold a key professional position in any of the following sectors and institutions:

• The energy industry
• Government
• NGOs
• International organizations

In order to cover the different starting points and specific goals of sustainable development in industrialized and developing countries, the program offers two possible specialization areas: Energy and Enviromental Management in Industrialised Countries/Energy and Environmental Management in Developing Countries and Energy and Environmental Management in Developing Countries. Both specializations offer comprehensive training energy and environmental economics, energy technology and energy management.

Graduates of the program may go on to pursue a doctorate.
