Chronical diseases

A significant increase in the incidence of chronic diseases such as type 1 diabetes mellitus, various allergies, atopic dermatitis and asthma is predicted for the coming years (Danne et al., 2022). Both chronic illnesses and long-term illnesses such as cancer confront teachers with major challenges in their everyday school life because these pupils are generally controlled with medication that they can go to school. Unfortunately, these children and young people often encounter teachers who have limited specialist knowledge and therefore sometimes make the wrong decisions. In practice, the affected pupils are often excluded from school trips or other activities, for example, and are unable to participate in everyday social life at school. However, children with chronic illnesses such as type 1 diabetes have the right to inclusion (§53 and §54 of SGB XII) and should be cared for in daycare centers, regular schools and after-school care (Deutscher Bundestag, 2022). Using the example of type 1 diabetes, a recent German study illustrates the major challenges for teachers with different needs and care requirements for children and adolescents with chronic diseases (Gutzweiler et al., 2020). Teachers complain about insufficient knowledge of the diseases and their modern therapies, a lack of institutional support and a lack of communication with parents and healthcare professionals. A Danish study (Schmidt et al., 2021) came to the conclusion that children and adolescents with atopic dermatitis are more probable to have no or a poorer school-leaving certificate. Scientists also found that the risk of learning disorders increases with the severity of the disease and that children could benefit from targeted school support (Abuabara et al., 2021). The aim of this content is to prepare and support future teachers for chronic diseases in their everyday school life.
