April 03, 2023 – Practical Workshop with FabricaDigitalis: Possible teaching-scenarios with Moodle

The practical workshop was attended by 16 participants from teaching and administration. After a thematic input of 30 minutes, the participants worked out design options for a moodle course in individual and group work.

A blueprint was used as a template, consisting of:

  • 5 didactic aspects, aligned on educational goals
  • 4 interaction levels for the designing of an online course
  • Aspects from the cognitive Load Theorie, to avoid cognitive overload.
Upcoming Events

September 28th, 2023 - Creating barrier-sensitive digital learning scenarios

In the 4-hour design thinking workshop, participants will develop persona-based learning/teaching scenarios in order to design barrier-sensitive digital content.

The workshop will be provided by the Digital InForm format in cooperation with FabricaDigitalis and the ZWW.

The registration takes place through the ZWW

November, 1st to 3rd ,2024– Workshopweek

In the upcoming November, Scandinavian experts and project collaborators are invited for a workshop week. With Martin Holmgren (Sweden) and Dr. Gerard Doetjes (Norway), We aim at developing solutions for barrier-sensitivity in universities and teacher education. Please feel invited to attend the lectures and seminars with your students and drop by the meet & greet on Thursday, Nov 2, 14-15 for vegan waffles & hot drinks at STUBBS.

The program is shown on our website.

April, 25th and 26th ,2024 – Closing conference

Project funding ends August 2024. We will present, discuss and transfer our STUDYasU results into the higher education landscape and into schools. The conference will be held as a "Fachtag" and with several practical workshops, also for students and with student peers. Stay tuned and be invited!

We will publish further information in the next few weeks.

Barrier-sensitive Rooms in Container Gothenburg

Find two workrooms meeting your diverse learning needs (DLN).

  • The quiet relaxation room in GOT 008 is for all members of the Europa-University Flensburg. You may use the room for a short, low-stimulus retreat.
  • GOT 008.1 is a workroom for students with visual impairments. Two computer workstations are equipped with special software to meet these DLN.

If you need to use these rooms, please contact the Diversity Representative.

Myth

Screenreader can read every digital content in an understandable way.

This myth is not true.

Screenreaders read out the text information of digital content. They enable people with visual impairments to perceive visual content via two other senses (acoustically via speech output or haptically via Braille output). The screenreader thus follows the two-senses principle. This means that information is made accessible through two other senses if one sense is restricted.

To enable a screenreader to read digital contents, content is to be designed as textinformation. This means:

  • Objects, such as Pictures or tables, require an understandable alternative text.
  • Texts needs a clean structure: e.g. heading levels, bullet points, standard text. These must be clearly formatted.
  • Hyperlinks must be named so that it is clear where the links leads.

Screen readers are used by people with visual impairments. In addition to technically feasible measures, it is important to describe clear the location of objects in the text. This helps to locate objects specifically with the screenreader and to have them read aloud.

Online-tools

NVDA

The NVDA screen reader (NonVisual Desktop Access) is a free screen reader that enables blind and visually impaired people to use the WindowsTM computer. The training requires some time, because the control and communication (text instead of picture) is unfamiliar for sighted people.

The NVDA screen reader can be installed for lecturers via the EUF kiosk.

The NVDA screen reader can be installed for Students via the NVAcces website.
Accessibility Test with Microsoft OfficeTM

Microsoft OfficeTM offers an integrated accessibility test. This function is to find under Review

The plugin scans the created content for defaults, such as alternative texts, table layout and text structure. More information and tips can be found at MicrosoftTM support pages.

Talk

In this video, an expert presents the work with a screenreader. by using two websites. The expert illustrates how the screenreader renders the content in barrier-sensitive and non-barrier-sensitive structures.
