September 21th, 2023 – Start of the seminar 'Barrier-sensitive teaching and learning'

This autumn semester, the seminar 'Barrier-sensitive teaching and learning' will take place for the first time. The seminar deals with topics on barrier-sensitive design of teaching and learning scenarios in three-hour workshops. Therefore, the project team cooperates with external experts. For example, educational experts from the Institute for Inclusive Education sensitise participants to the perspective of people with disabilities. Martin Holgren (Umea University) and Prof. Dr. Gerard Doetjes (University in Oslo) will provide insights into teacher training in Sweden and Norway. Florian Hilgers from the Landes Förderzentrum Sehen will show how teaching materials can be designed to be barrier-free. The Büro für Leichte Sprache Köln (Office for Easy Language Cologne) will give an insight into the topic of easy language and how it is used in everyday school life. With this seminar, STUDYasU is carrying out a further transfer of previous project results to the EUF.

Upcoming Events

November, 1st to 3rd ,2024– Workshopweek

In the upcoming November, Scandinavian experts and project collaborators are invited for a workshop week. With Martin Holmgren (Sweden) and Dr. Gerard Doetjes (Norway), We aim at developing solutions for barrier-sensitivity in universities and teacher education. Please feel invited to attend the lectures and seminars with your students and drop by the meet & greet on Thursday, Nov 2, 14-15 for vegan waffles & hot drinks at STUBBS.

The program is shown on our website.

December 05th, 2023 - Creating barrier-sensitive digital learning scenarios

In the 3-hour design thinking workshop, participants will develop persona-based learning/teaching scenarios in order to design barrier-sensitive digital content.

The workshop will be provided by the Digital InForm format in cooperation with FabricaDigitalis and the ZWW.

The registration takes place through the ZWW

December 7th, 2023 - Workshop at the CAU in Kiel

Christian Albrechts University in Kiel is holding its Teaching and Learning Day under the motto 'Learning spaces for innovative and participative teaching/learning settings'. In this context, STUDYasU is holding a workshop on the development of barrier-sensitive digital-supported teaching and learning scenarios. The focus is on awareness of and dealing with DLN.

April, 25th and 26th ,2024 – Closing conference

Project funding ends August 2024. We will present, discuss and transfer our STUDYasU results into the higher education landscape and into schools. The conference will be held as a "Fachtag" and with several practical workshops, also for students and with student peers. Stay tuned and be invited!

We will publish further information in the next few weeks.

Barrier-sensitivity at the EUF

Positive examples at the EUF

In the seminar 'Barrier-sensitive teaching and learning', the students worked out positive examples at the EUF. The prerequisite was that the positive examples had been experienced or observed themselves. The results could be divided into the areas of teaching and buildings:

Teaching:

  • Textbook was provided as an audio book
  • Sensitisation to the topic of accessibility, inclusion, barrier sensitivity through the curriculum
  • Compensation for disadvantages
  • Sign language course

Buildings:

  • Electric doors
  • Lifts
  • Ramps
  • Residence on campus

The examples show didactic and organisational measures that are already in use at EUF. You can tell us about other positive examples you have observed via studyasyouare-PleaseRemoveIncludingDashes-@uni-flensburg.de or Instagram (@studyasyouare).

Myth

The digital content needs of people with disabilities and impairments are fundamentally different.

This myth is  true.

The use of digital content is heterogeneous among people with disabilities and impairments. Therefore, a generalization of needs and requirements is not helpful (Kiratli & Lerche 2022):

  • Blind people use different screen readers and additional Braille displays to access digital content.
  • People with visual impairments use magnification software to read the content. Speech output is also used in some cases.
  • People with limited motor skills usually use technical aids to simplify control. Examples are one-hand keyboards or head mice.
  • People with cognitive or mental impairments use different aids depending on the severity of the impairment. These can range from software to reduce the density of information (hiding graphics) to human assistance. Easy language also facilitates the comprehensibility of the content.
  • People with hearing impairments need subtitles, audio description and sign language to understand the audio track of videos, depending on the type of impairment. Audio transcription is also a helpful measure, especially for audio-only files such as podcasts.

Digital content can be prepared in a barrier-sensitive way so that the different requirements are supported (STUDYasU):

  • Clearly structure content.
  • Use formatting templates
  • Use sans-serif fonts, font size 20 pt and 1.5 line spacing
  • Ensure high color contrast between font and background
  • Name figures clearly
  • Provide relevant illustrations with an understandable alternative text
  • Take the two-senses principle into account: With the three senses of sight, hearing and touch, at least two senses should be used.
  • Provide videos with at least subtitles and audio description.

Online-tools

STUDYasU-Templates

STUDYasU has prepared templates for designing barrier-sensitive digital content. These templates can be used to create barrier-sensitive PowerPoint files, Word and PDF documents.

Talk

In this video, Niels Luithardt talks about the various needs and requirements of people with disabilities and impairments. Niels Luithardt is blind himself and is actively involved in the accessibility of digital content in Schleswig-Holstein. Niels supports STUDYasU as an external expert.
