Postcolonial Education in Europe

Symposium as part of the EUF Europe Week 2019

Postcolonial theories question Eurocentric perspectives on the past and present of a globalized world and its ruling orders and migration regimes, and make colonial amnesias vulnerable. This is also of utmost importance for a critical understanding of educational concepts and practices. The aim of the international and interdisciplinary symposium is to discuss approaches and perspectives of postcolonial theories, postcolonial memory cultures and decolonial pedagogical practices.

On the one hand, it will be discussed how the perception of past and present is currently shifting in the German-Danish border region under the impression of an intensified confrontation with colonial history. On the other hand, postcolonial memory cultures and decolonial pedagogies will be the subject of reflection from an international perspective. Pedagogical concepts and practices in European contexts of migration and in the global South will be questioned as to how a postcolonial understanding of education can be developed: To what extent is education entangled in postcolonial global power relations? To what extent can it facilitate critical reflections on corresponding structures? The symposium "Postcolonial Education in Europe" will explore these questions in various lecture and discussion formats.
