"Participatory Dynamics and Democratic Innovation in the EU" (ParDem), is a project for which a proposal at the DFG for a Heisenberg grant will be submitted. The starting point for ParDem is a twofold observation: (1) that the opportunities for democratic participation in political and social processes have increased significantly in the EU in recent years, and (2) that this development has so far hardly strengthened democracy. Against this backdrop, ParDem seeks to address the how democratic innovation may build on existing participatory dynamics and preconceptions of democracy on three different levels – micro, meso and macro. The aim here is to derive approaches and strategies that contribute to strengthening the democratic integrity of the EU.
