Program profile
The European Cultures and Society (EUCS) bachelor’s degree program at Europa-Universität Flensburg is an English-taught, interdisciplinary degree program focusing on European scholarship and research in the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences.
As a student in the EUCS program, you will acquire subject-specific and methodological skills in disciplines within the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences relevant to European Studies. In parallel, you will choose either a cultural or social science focus.
You will also acquire expertise in the practical design of various fields of practice relevant to Europe.
The program includes a mandatory semester abroad in one of our many international partner universities. This study abroad allows you to deepen your foreign language and intercultural communication skills, among other things.

Coursework focuses on two thematic areas—"Topics and Disciplines" and "Doing Europe"—in three successive phases.
This phase focuses on European studies within and across disciplines, and introduces basic scholarly skills. "Topics and Disciplines" gives students basic discipline-specific knowledge about how scholars in cultural studies, the humanities and the social sciences approach different aspects of Europe. They also develop an understanding of how these approaches within disciplines interconnect and complement each other across disciplines. "Doing Europe" introduces the basics of academic and scientific work. In this unit, students also participate in projects with students enrolled in higher semesters, and learn hermeneutic and social scientific research methods.
Introductory phase (semesters 1 and 2)
This phase focuses on European studies within and across disciplines, and introduces basic scholarly skills. Advanced phase (semesters 3 and 4)
During this phase, students take advanced classes in one of two thematic areas—"European Cultures" or "European Society"—as part of the Topics and Disciplines curriculum.
- "European Cultures" students take ten modules (50 LP/ECTS credits) in that topic area from their 3rd semester on, plus four modules (20 LP) from the European Society curriculum.
- "European Society" students take ten modules (50 LP) in that topic area from their 3rd semester on, plus four modules (20 LP) from the European Cultures curriculum.
- All students take the module "TD CS1" (5 LP). During this module, they work on a topic in their chosen specialization area and receive ECTS credits for it.
In the third-semester project area, "Doing Europe," students design and carry out guided research on European topics in one of four fields: "Research," "Journalism," "Art and Scenography" and "Entrepreneurship."

The EUCS B.A. program opens up a variety of career paths to students. You may choose to enter the job market directly after graduation, or enroll in a master’s program.

Pursuing a master's degree
The EUCS program gives students an excellent foundation for advanced study in an international, interdisciplinary or subject-oriented master’s program.
You may choose to enroll in a master’s degree program at Europa-Universität Flensburg, elsewhere in Germany, or abroad.
