Profile

The Master’s programme Sustainable Energy focuses on the causes and consequences of the climate crisis and the challenges of sustainably transforming energy systems. It equally considers technological, economic, ecological, and social dimensions.

The programme addresses the energy transition as a key socio-ecological challenge that requires both technical and societal knowledge and action. The aim is to develop sustainable solutions that contribute to tackling climate change, transforming energy systems, and conserving resources.

Students can choose from three specialisation tracks, each offering distinct focal points:

Transition Specialisation

The aim of the "Transition" specialisation is to equip students with the ability to holistically analyse energy systems and design sustainable transformation processes. From an inter- and transdisciplinary perspective, the programme examines the factors that enable, accelerate, or hinder the transformation of energy systems. Special emphasis is placed on the interactions between various stakeholders, political frameworks, technological innovations, and social and ecological impacts.

Upon graduation, students will possess in-depth knowledge and practical skills to implement innovative solutions across diverse fields such as industry, politics, research, or non-governmental organisations, thereby actively contributing to the energy transition and a more sustainable future.

The M.Eng. in Sustainable Energy is a collaboration between Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF) and Hochschule Flensburg (HS). It offers a dynamic learning environment shaped by the diversity of both lecturers and students. Participants come from a wide range of academic and cultural backgrounds, with a significant proportion of students in the "Development" specialisation coming from the Global South, further enriching the programme’s diversity.

The Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems (ZNES) at Europa-Universität Flensburg conducts research on the challenges and opportunities of sustainable societal transformation in the energy sector from an interdisciplinary perspective. The centre combines theory and practical application, focusing on how sustainable energy and societal systems can be designed for the future.

Study content & structure

Overview

The Master’s programme Sustainable Energy is designed as an inter- and transdisciplinary programme that integrates the technical, economic, and social aspects of the energy transition. The "Transition" specialisation focuses on the complex challenges associated with the shift towards sustainable energy systems. Our holistic approach takes into account both national and international perspectives.

Explanation of study plan

The Master’s programme Sustainable Energy comprises 90 ECTS/Credit Points (CP) and is primarily taught in English. This full-time programme spans three semesters, with each semester accounting for 30 CP. The third semester is dedicated to completing your Master’s thesis, worth 30 CP, which integrates the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the programme.

The programme combines shared compulsory modules for all three specialisation tracks with track-specific compulsory and elective modules. A wide selection of elective modules allows you to tailor your studies to your individual career goals. Additionally, you can take courses from other programmes, such as the M.A. International Management, M.A. Transformation Studies, or M.Eng. Wind Engineering, to develop an interdisciplinary academic profile.

Thanks to small class sizes (fewer than 30 participants), interactive teaching methods, and a strong focus on peer-to-peer exchange, you will gain not only academic knowledge but also valuable personal and social skills. Collaboration with industry partners is facilitated through excursions, projects, and an active alumni network.

Important Study Documents

The study regulations define the framework for proper academic progression within your programme. Using the study regulations and module catalogues, you can plan your studies and understand which modules to take in each semester. The legal framework for these aspects is outlined in the examination regulations.

Career Opportunities

Career Opportunities

The aim of the Sustainable Energy Master’s programme is to train highly qualified professionals for careers in academia, policy (and policy advising), business, and society. Graduates are prepared to take on key roles in the energy sector, government, NGOs, and international organisations, or to pursue academic careers involving independent research in the field of sustainable energy systems.

Through close connections and partnerships with industry, many students secure part-time positions aligned with their interests during their studies. These valuable experiences enhance their practical skills and knowledge while providing opportunities to build professional networks.

Graduates of the Sustainable Energy programme are qualified for a wide range of career paths, including:

  • Energy Sector: Leading positions in energy supply companies, engineering firms, and service providers.
  • International Organisations and NGOs: Roles in organisations that support global and local projects on energy transitions and climate justice.
  • Public Administration: Positions in sustainability and energy departments within governmental agencies and public administrations.
  • Research and Academia: Academic careers or independent scientific work in the field of sustainable energy systems.
  • Consulting and Public Engagement: Roles in institutions and organisations focusing on education, communication, and media related to environmental and energy topics.
