Dysmate - a normalization study in Germany

Dysmate is a test procedure for the early diagnosis of written language skills of students at risk of reading and spelling difficulties in secondary school (Nergård-Nilssen & Friborg, 2021). The aim of the project, which has been running since the end of 2021, is to adapt and normalize the test procedure, which originally came from Norway, for German-speaking countries.

The procedure, built on a standardized, two-stage structure, consists a screening and a follow-up test. It is suitable for testing in a classroom setting and can be used for all types of school. It is administered digitally, and the subsequent evaluation is automated, improving user-friendliness.

The procedure has currently been translated and adapted into German, taking into account language-specific orthographic features and checking linguistic criteria. In addition, information videos on the topics of diagnostics and support for teachers of the normalization study and its use in schools (certification course) can currently be accessed online.

The current normalization is subject to research-related questions. These include, for example, whether the adapted test procedure can also reliably differentiate between students with and without a risk of reading and spelling difficulties in German.
