History of the reasearch on the physiology of stereoscopic vision and of stereoscopic devices

Research into the effects of binocular vision in physics began in 1838 at the latest with the development of the first mirror stereoscope by Wheatstone. The awareness of spatial perception caused by binocular vision had already been known in previous centuries and had been verbalized by painters, among others. With the development of an apparatus that was able to convey an impression of space with two static images viewed simultaneously, physicists working experimentally had an opportunity to explore the boundary conditions of spatial vision. After a very dynamic development phase, in which the stereo viewer (based on Brewster's model) quickly found its way into the non-scientific public, various technologies were developed into the 20th century that brought the field back into scientific and technical laboratories.
