Master Sustainable Energy. Shaping the Future.

Climate change. Loss of biodiversity. Resource scarcity. Growing social inequality. Energy crisis. The challenges of the 21st century make it clear that our current energy system is undergoing a fundamental transformation. But how can sustainable and just energy systems be designed?

The interdisciplinary Master's programme Sustainable Energy at Europa-Universität Flensburg, in cooperation with Flensburg University of Applied Sciences, offers a unique opportunity to explore these critical questions and develop innovative solutions for sustainable energy systems.

A defining feature of this programme is its holistic approach, viewing energy systems as socio-ecological challenges that encompass technical, economic, environmental, and societal dimensions. Students learn to develop transformative strategies that integrate technical innovations with the principles of sustainability, justice, and global responsibility. The goal is to design energy systems that meet the demands of a sustainable future.

The program was developed at the Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (ZNES), a joint initiative of Europa-Universität Flensburg and Flensburg University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with experts from various departments and disciplines. At the EUF, the CREST and the departments of Sustainable Energy Transition (NEW), Energy and Development, Norbert Elias Centre (NEC) and Plural Economics are particularly involved in the field of energy research and teaching.

It is characterised by a strong practical orientation, fostering intensive exchange with industry partners and integrating current research projects. Students engage in interactive project work on forward-looking topics, addressing both the latest scientific findings and practical challenges in the fields of energy systems and climate research.
