The Team Behind the Sustainable Energy Master

Lecturers, researchers, students, and alumni in Flensburg are committed to innovative solutions for a sustainable energy future. With an interdisciplinary approach, the departments combine technical and societal perspectives to address the challenges of the energy transition holistically. The student association and alumni association promote exchange and strengthen valuable networks. Together, we work towards making the energy transition sustainable and future-oriented.

Interdisciplinary Expertise for the Energy Transition

Our dedicated team of experienced lecturers and researchers combines expertise from various disciplines – sustainable energy systems, energy economics, technological innovations, and development cooperation. In addition to technical and economic aspects, we consider social justice, ecological compatibility, energy sufficiency, and gender issues as key elements of a sustainable energy transition.

The Master’s programme in Sustainable Energy was developed at the Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems (ZNES) at Europa-Universität Flensburg and Flensburg University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with experts from different departments and fields. The Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems (ZNES) connects teaching and research to develop innovative solutions for a sustainable energy future. It supports the bachelor’s and master’s programmes through hands-on projects and promotes interdisciplinary research in the areas of renewable energy, energy transition, and sustainable technologies. The departments involved in the programme include:

Extensive Study Programmes: Bachelor, Master, PhD

Students in Flensburg benefit from a comprehensive study programme in the field of sustainable energy systems. The Bachelor's degree in Sustainable Energy Systems offers specialisations in Industrial Engineering for Energy Transition, Renewable Energy Technology, and Electrical Energy Technology.

The subsequent Master’s programme in Sustainable Energy focuses on the specialisations of Transition, Development, and Engineering. Prevention opportunities, closely linked to the research priorities of ZNES, complement the academic perspectives in Flensburg.

The Bachelor's degree in Sustainable Energy Systems at Flensburg University of Applied Sciences provides interdisciplinary knowledge for addressing the challenges of the energy transition. Students acquire competencies in engineering, economics, and sustainability to help shape a future-proof energy supply.

The programme comprises 210 ECTS, lasts 7 semesters (full-time study), and offers three specialisations:

  • Industrial Engineering for Energy Transition: Focus on the economic and engineering aspects of the energy transition.
  • Renewable Energy Technology: Development and application of renewable energy technologies.
  • Electrical Energy Technology: Specialisation in electrical energy systems and their components.

The programme combines theoretical foundations with practice-oriented projects. Graduates are qualified for technical and leadership positions in the energy sector or for further studies in the Master Sustainable Energy

The Master's programme in Sustainable Energy at Europa-Universität Flensburg, in cooperation with Flensburg University of Applied Sciences, addresses the causes and consequences of the climate crisis as well as the sustainable transformation of energy systems from an interdisciplinary perspective. It combines technological, economic, ecological, and social viewpoints to develop sustainable solutions for the energy transition.

The 90-ECTS programme lasts three semesters (full-time) and offers three specialisations:

  • Transition: Social Change and Sustainability
  • Development: Development Cooperation
  • Engineering: Energy Technology

The main language of instruction is English, supplemented by some German-language elective modules. The programme prepares graduates for responsible roles in science, business, and society.

After successfully completing the Master’s programme in Sustainable Energy (M.Eng.), numerous paths to a PhD are open to you. In our departments, doctoral candidates conduct research on various topics and research fields.

Activities of the Student Association and Alumni Network

The student association and the alumni association (Förderverein der Energiewissenschaften EUM/EnWi e.V.) enrich the studies with a variety of activities that go beyond the lecture hall. These include networking events, exciting insights into the energy sector, and practice-oriented workshops on the sustainable transformation of energy systems.
