Ulrich Glassmann has been Professor of Comparative Political Economy at Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF) since 2016 and an associated researcher at the Cluster of Excellence The Politics of Inequality at the University of Konstanz since 2024. From 2021 to 2024, he was Vice President for European and International Affairs at EUF and in this role was responsible for EUF’s successful funding application in 2024 with the EMERGE University Alliance as part of the European Commission’s European Universities Initiative.
After completing his Master’s degree in Political Science, History and Philosophy at the University of Cologne (1997), he was a doctoral student at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne and an external collaborator in a research project at the European University Institute in Florence. In 2005, he was awarded a PhD (Dr. rer pol.) in Economics and Social Science at the University of Osnabrück and was a visiting researcher at the Centro Interdipartimentale di Ricerca sul Cambiamento Politico at the University of Siena in the winter semester of 2006/2007.
In 2007, he was appointed Assistant Professor (Akademischer Rat auf Zeit) at the Chair of Comparative Politics at the University of Cologne. During his time at the University of Cologne, he received research funding from the Volkswagen Foundation and the Thyssen Foundation. From 2013 to 2015, he was a Professor pro tempore at the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Konstanz. He then worked at the Konstanz Cluster of Excellence Cultural Foundations of Integration.
In his research, Ulrich Glassmann focusses on economic, educational and social policy in international comparison, in particular the conflict dimensions of inequality, debt and corruption. His theoretical interest lies in the patterns of co-operation and conflict of economic and political actors in collective action dilemmas. The Mediterranean economies are a regional focus.
