Scholarships and Student Financial Aid
The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) gives a good overview of the various funding opportunities for students, graduates and researchers. For some of these scholarships, you need to apply already from your home country. The DAAD database allows you to use keywords and other criteria to search for specific scholarships and funding opportunities.
Europa-Universität Flensburg does not award its own student scholarships; it only gives out DAAD STITBET scholarships.
Financed by the German Federal Foreign Office, the STIBET scholarship program of the DAAD enables universities to award STIBET scholarships to foreign students at their own discretion. The program supports undergraduate and graduate students. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a regular degree program with the aim to obtain either a bachelor’s or master’s degree (exception: contact scholarships). Universities can use the scholarship funds to award three types of scholarships:
- 1 – DAAD DEGREE-COMPLETION GRANTS funded by the Federal Foreign Office (only for international degree-seeking students who are in the final stages of their degree program): These grants mainly seek to provide funding to enable foreign students who have fallen into situations of economic need (through no fault of their own) to concentrate on their studies and successfully complete their degree program. To be eligible, students must have a very good academic performance record, and they must expect to graduate within one year.
- 2 – DAAD SCHOLARSHIP FOR HIGHLY ENGAGED STUDENTS funded by the Federal Foreign Office (only for international degree-seeking students): To be eligible, students must have a very good academic performance record, and they must have distinguished themselves through exceptional engagement within the international context of the university.
- 3 – DAAD CONTACT SCHOLARSHIP financed by the Federal Foreign Office (only for exchange students): Contact scholarships enable universities to award scholarships to foreign students – especially those from partner universities – and thus to strengthen their international partnerships. Contact scholarships can only be awarded to students from partner universities or universities with which partnership agreements are planned.
Application Materials:
- Letter of motivation for your selected scholarship program
- Tabular curriculum vitae
- Proof that you are a student at Europa-Universität Flensburg (Studienbescheinigung)
- Europa-Universität Flensburg grade transcript (Transcript of Records) issued by the Examination Office; doctoral students should provide a copy of the master's degree certificate
- Letter of recommendation from a university lecturer (can be sent directly to Lucila Morales de Mittag in the International Center,)
- Proof of current enrollment or, for a contact scholarship, nomination from the partner university
- For the DEGREE-COMPLETION GRANT, in addition to the documents above you will need to submit:
-
Documents that provide information about your social situation that can justify and support your application (copy of your rental agreement, copy of your health insurance policy)
-
Written statement from you about your income and assets
-
Your financial documents (for example, your bank statements of the last 3 months)
Please send your application to incoming@uni-flensburg.de
The Protestant Student Community (Evangelische Studierendengemeinde or ESG) offers social counseling for international students. Under certain conditions, students can also apply for financial support.
The Catholic Student Community (Katholische Hochschulgemeinde or KSG) provides information on scholarships and offers financial support under certain conditions.

Financial help - Erasmus
There is a possibility of funding from the Erasmus program for incoming Ukrainian students (enrolled in Ukraine), graduate students (received a degree in Ukraine within the last 12 months) and university staff (working at a Ukrainian university). A few scholarships are available for students for the duration of one semester. For more information on deadlines and application procedures, please contact the International Center.
Loans and Support
Donation Fund of the Europa-Universität Flensburg Foundation e.V.
Who Can Apply
The Donation Fund of the Europa-Universität Flensburg Foundation e.V./ Fördergesellschaft der Europa-Universität Flensburg e.V. is financed from a generous donation by the E. W. Kuhlmann Foundation Hamburg. Refugees of any age who are enrolled students at Europa-Universität Flensburg, or who participate in the "Program for the Academic Preparation and Integration of Refugees" (ProRef) at EUF may apply for a loan from the Donation Fund. Loan applicants must provide proof of their refugee background (proof of arrival/BÜMA, Aufenthaltsgestattung, Aufenthaltsduldung or residence permit), and either proof of enrollment at EUF or proof of participation in ProRef for the entire loan period.
Eligibility
If the applicant receives funds from other state or private funding institutions, these are to be credited in full against the loan to be granted. Applicant neediness should be based on the principles for BAföG (§ 13 BAföG).
Loans may not be granted for the purpose of repaying loans. Loans are granted without legal entitlement and in accordance with the availability of funding such as:
1. Student loans, if state or private (educational) support does not begin at the start of studies and the granting of the loan enables the student to begin her/his studies
2. Bridge loans, if state or private (educational) support is temporarily interrupted and the granting of the loan enables the student to continue her/his studies
3. Hardship loans, toavoid hardship in special individual cases
Loans are only intended to bridge short-term financial bottlenecks (for example, when state or private educational funding has been interrupted). Applicants can apply for a loan term of up to 6 months. In special individual cases, the loan holder can request an extension of the originally approved term by sending an informal letter stating the reasons for the extension request. The loan is interest-free for the approved term.
The loan amount (need) is calculated on the basis of the applicant’s individual needs (needs calculation) and is based on the BAföG amount. The loan amount should not exceed six times the maximum BAföG amount. Justified exceptions to this are permitted in special individual cases.
In any case, the loan payment will cease when the loan holder receives another state or private educational support (for example, a BAföG payment) in the same amount. The awarding commission must be informed of this immediately.
Guarantee
As a rule, a directly enforceable guarantee or bank guarantee for the entire loan amount must be provided as security for the loan. This guarantee must be provided in written form.
The identity of the guarantor must be proven beyond doubt. Her/his signature must be executed in the presence of an authorized representative of the Europa-Universität Flensburg Foundation e.V. / Fördergesellschaft der Universität Flensburg e.V. In cases where it is unreasonable to expect the guarantor to sign in person at the Europa-Universität Flensburg Foundation e.V. / Fördergesellschaft der Universität Flensburg e.V., the guarantor's identity can also be established by providing a copy of her or his identity card. The guarantor must be a permanent resident of the Federal Republic of Germany and must offer the economic guarantee that she or he can fully assume the financial obligation incurred by the student or ProRef participant in the event of a claim.
The guarantor must provide suitable evidence of her/his economic capacity. These include salary slips or income tax assessment notices.
In special individual cases, the awarding commission may dispense with the provision of a guarantee.
A loan will only be granted on the basis of an in-person application. The application form must contain information about the applicant’s reason for applying for a loan, the type of loan (see § 3), the monthly amount of the loan (see § 4) and the term of the loan (see § 4) and this information must be submitted together with the following documents:
- Copy of identity card/passport, or proof of refugee status (proof of arrival/BÜMA, residence permit/Aufenthaltsgestattung, residence permit/Aufenthaltserlaubnis, or Duldung),
- Certificate of student status (letter of admission, if applicable) from Europa-Universität Flensburg or certificate of participation in the ProRef program
- Resume
- Written statement by applicant explaining his/her income and financial situation
- Income documents for the applicant (for example, bank statements)
- Declaration of guarantee (Bürgschaftserklärung) (Exception: loan granted in accordance with § 5.4)
- Proof of income of the guarantor (exception: loans granted in accordance with § 5.4)
- Copy of the last BAföG decision, or confirmation that BAföG has been applied for
- Confirmation from the competent authority (e.g. social center or job center) that bridging benefits cannot be granted
- Official loan application form (see also: loan granting guidelines)
Application documents must be submitted to the Coordination Office for Refugee Programs at Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF), from where they will be forwarded to the Award Commission:

Hilde Domin Program (DAAD): Support for Students at Risk
Hilde Domin-Program (DAAD): Funding for students at risk
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) administers the scholarship program "Hilde Domin Program" with funds from the Federal Foreign Office (AA). The program serves to support students and doctoral candidates from across the globe, who are at risk of being formally or de facto denied educational or other rights in their country of origin, and to provide these students and doctoral candidates with an opportunity to begin or complete a study or research degree at a higher education institution in Germany. Students and doctoral candidates nominated and accepted under the program will receive a scholarship for a degree course of personal choice and according to individual qualifications. The scholarship is sufficient to cover the necessary costs incurred during their study or research stay.
The nomination and selection procedure
Potential candidates cannot themselves apply for participation in the Hilde Domin Programme, but are nominated by the management (presidiums) of Europa-Universität Flensburg, legal entity domiciled in Germany and which carries out an activity in the field of science, research and teaching and/or the protection of human rights, the promotion of peace and democracy or the rule of law.
All nominations shall formally be made by Europa-Universät Flensburg by filling in the nomination form online. Thereafter, on the basis of an initial plausibility check, suitable candidates will be contacted by the DAAD and invited to apply via the DAAD online application portal. The application documents submitted by the candidates are then verified by the DAAD for completeness and formal correctness. The final selection of candidates will be carried out by independent selection committees appointed by the DAAD. Both the status of risk and academic performance are assessed as part of the selection process.
Important to note: Multiple nominations do not bear any advantages. One nomination per candidate is sufficient.
Also important: The DAAD can only award a limited number of scholarships. Candidates must in addition to being individually at risk, also demonstrate good academic prospects for studying in Germany. Proposed candidates should have sufficient knowledge of German or English (corresponding to level B2) by the nomination deadline to be able to complete a study degree program/research project in the respective language.
Nomination requirements
Students and doctoral candidates from all academic disciplines can be nominated, apart from human medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and law
- who can prove or credibly demonstrate a threat to their personal well-being or safety (e.g. physical violence, arrest, denial of civil and educational rights, etc.) to the nominating institution
- who are in possession of educational certificates that enable entrance to a higher education institution and warrant the pursuit of a desired higher education qualification according to the anabin database
- who may not be already residing in Germany or the European Union at the time of nomination
Nomination and application deadline
Nominations of suitable candidates can be submitted online at any time.
In principle, there are two selections per year. The application periods are based on the start of the academic semesters.
The following time periods and deadlines apply for nominations and applications for the upcoming academic semesters:
Planned start of studies summer semester 2024
- Nominations: until 15th March, 2023
- Application period: 16th March until 29th April, 2023
Planned start of studies winter semester 2024/25
- Nominations: until 15th September, 2023
- Application period: 18th September until 16th October, 2023

Part-Time Jobs & Internships
Part-Time Jobs and Student Internships
Many students work alongside their studies. However, it is not realistically feasible to pay for all your living expenses in Flensburg only through part-time work, while studying at the same time.
On the DAAD website you can find an overview of the legal requirements for international students who want to do a part-time job or an internship in Germany.
Student part-time jobs are popular and therefore not easy to find. Good German language skills are often a prerequisite. To find job listings, check the websites listed in the Academics portal and classified announcements in regional or local newspapers. You can also asked directly at workplaces, like cafés and restaurants.
Job portal from the Flensburg Campus
The new Flensburg Campus job portal has recently been launched.
Here you not only have the opportunity to find interesting vacancies for jobs, internships and dissertations, but also to search for exciting companies for unsolicited applications.
