Going abroad for a shorter period of time is possible within the framework of an internship, a language course, a summer school or foreign language assistance.
For tips on preparation and experience reports, check out the DAAD Correspondents website.
If you'd like to deepen your expertise in a specific field, explore a potential career path, or dive into social projects, summer or winter schools are a perfect fit. These programs can conveniently fit into your semester break and usually span between one to six weeks. While participation fees differ and usually have to be self-financed, there are some select programs that offer financial assistance. To find out what you should bear in mind when organizing your stay, you can visit the DAAD website.
Current offers are listed on the News website and on webpages like Summer Schools in Europe.
If you are able to earn course credits as part of a Summer/Winter School, ask the relevant person in your program whether it is possible to transfer these credits to EUF (i.e., to have them recognized).
- usually self-financed
- DAAD scholarship "Go EAST" (Central, Southeast and Eastern Europe as well as South Caucasus and Central Asia)
- Scholarship "Blended Intensive Programs and other short stays (BIP-short)" at Erasmus+ partner universities of the EUF (EU, Iceland, Norway, Turkey)
Mastering foreign languages can significantly boost both your personal and your professional training. The Language Center at Europa-Universität Flensburg offers a range of free language courses and a tandem language learning exchange.
Of course, you can also attend language courses where the language is actually spoken in everyday life. Several international universities and private institutions offer these courses, allowing you to deeply immerse in the culture and environment of your host country. Many language schools also offer discounts for early booking, so keep an eye out!
To find the course that suits you best, visit the DAAD website.

Erasmus+ scholarship holders can take part in online language courses at the EU Academy free of charge.
Sensitization to other cultures, experience in other countries, and language skills are plus points that make it easier to start your professional life. Why else is an internship abroad worth doing? You'll find plenty to inspire you on the DAAD website! The site also offers tips about how to organize an internship abroad, from planning and preparing to scheduling, applying, etc.
Internships abroad can take numerous forms:
- Voluntary/compulsory internship
- Unpaid/paid
- Self-organized/arranged
- Internships for students/graduates
Current internship opportunities are listed on the News website, in the UniNow app (Feed International) and on webpages like ErasmusIntern. And on the DAAD website, you'll also find comprehensive information (in German) on internship placement.
Once you've found an internship, you can apply for scholarship and grant funding. Some internships have specific funding programs.

Internships for Educational Studies students
If you're studying to get your teaching degree, you can do the teaching internship semester which is done during master's studies at a school abroad. The ZfL internship office can inform you about prerequisites, requirements and application procedures. You can also do a graduate internship abroad - that is, a specialized internship during or after your bachelor's degree, or after you finish your master's degree.
Feel free to check out the pages of the Pädagogischer Austauschdienst (German Pedagogical Exchange Service) for more opportunities to go abroad.
The following funding options are available to you:
- DAAD Lehramt International (international teaching program for undergraduate and graduate students)

This program offers the opportunity to gain practical teaching experience abroad - even for non-teacher training students. Depending on the country of placement, you will support German teachers at foreign schools for five to eleven months, in some countries at universities.
The application deadline is usually in November (USA) or January (other countries).
For further information about the program, visit the Pädagogischer Austauschdienst website (German Pedagogical Exchange Service).
