History of the Programme

The Master’s programme in Sustainable Energy has a long and diverse history, developed through close collaboration between Europa-Universität Flensburg and Flensburg University of Applied Sciences. Its origins date back more than 30 years, reflecting the continuous adaptation to the evolving energy and environmental landscape.

1989 - ARTES (Appropriate Rural Technologies and Extension Skills):
The foundation was laid with ARTES, a master’s programme aimed at training professionals for development cooperation. The focus was on technical solutions and strategies for sustainable development in rural areas.

1997 - EUM (Diploma Programme in Energy and Environmental Management):
The introduction of the EUM diploma programme marked the launch of an industrial engineering programme emphasising the integration of engineering and economics in the context of energy and environmental management. The goal was to prepare students for the challenges of the global energy transition.

2000 - SESAM (Sustainable Energy Systems and Management):
ARTES was further developed and transformed into the Master of Science in SESAM. This programme placed a stronger emphasis on sustainable energy systems and the management of renewable energy.

2006 - Bachelor in Energy Sciences and Master in EUM:
The EUM diploma programme was separated into a bachelor’s degree in Energy Sciences with a focus on Energy and Environmental Management (coordinated by Flensburg University of Applied Sciences) and a Master’s degree in Energy and Environmental Management (coordinated by EUF).

2009 - Merger of SESAM and EUM:
The SESAM and EUM programmes were merged into a joint master’s programme. This created two specialisations: Energy and Environmental Management for Industrialised Countries (EUM) and Energy and Environmental Management for Developing Countries (EEM).

2024 - Master in Sustainable Energy:
The new Master’s programme in Sustainable Energy combines the contents of the previous EEM (Energy and Environmental Management) and EUM programmes, offering a modern, interdisciplinary curriculum with three specialisations:

  • Transition (formerly EUM)
  • Development (formerly EEM)
  • Engineering (new)
