reGon - Analysis of local and regional energy networks in the context of the integrated European energy system

The reGon research project builds on the open_eGo and eGon projects, in the context of which free data models and tools have been developed that enable the integrated analysis of our energy system and the identification of suitable transformation paths. The aim of the reGon project is to ensure and shape the transfer of the models and tools developed over many years of research work into practice.

Description

The transformation of the energy system plays a crucial role on the path to climate neutrality. Successfully implementing the next steps of transformation and ensuring a stable and secure system requires in-depth studies of our grids. Within the framework of the open_eGo and eGon research projects, open data models and tools have been developed in recent years together with project partners. These models enable the integrated analysis of our energy system and the identification of suitable transformation paths. The open data contain spatially and temporally high-resolution models of the German energy system, taking into account the electricity, heat, gas, and mobility sectors. They comprise in-depth data on flexibility at all grid levels and across the various sectors and, within the open grid planning tools, offer the possibility of comprehensive analyses and optimization across all grid levels.

The aim of the reGon research project is to ensure and shape the practical transfer of these tools, developed over many years of research, for those shaping the energy system transition. To this end, these will be further developed and significantly improved for a more user-friendly application, and their practical applicability will be demonstrated using five use cases. These use cases will be worked on together with associated partners from the field, and scenario assumptions and results will be validated.
