About Erasmus+
Enriching lives. Opening minds. Erasmus+
Erasmus+ is the European Union's program for education, training, youth, and sport in Europe. It enables students and staff alike – including teaching personnel, researchers, and administrators – to gain international experience, with each grantee helping to dismantle geographical borders between countries as well as those between individual minds. Through this work, Erasmus+ has played a vital role in promoting shared European values and peaceful coexistence for over 35 years.
The program offers higher education funding for the following purposes:
- Individual mobility (study/SMS, internship/SMP, teaching/STA, training/STT)
- Mobility consortia
- Collaborative partnerships
- Erasmus Mundus
- Capacity-building projects
- Alliances for Innovation
- European Universities
- Forward-looking projects
- European experimental measures
- Jean Monnet actions
- Teacher Academies
For the 2021-2027 period, Erasmus+ has a budget of more than €26 billion. The program focuses on social inclusion, the green and digital transformations, and promoting young people's participation in democratic life. It has since supported international stays for an estimated more than 15 million people – including nearly 1 million Germans in higher education.
Promoting language competence and language acquisition is one of the core objectives of the Erasmus+ program. It enables grant recipients to acquire and deepen their workplace languages and/or national languages for free during their time abroad, via EU Academy platform language courses and resources.
You can learn more about Erasmus+ on the website of the European Commission.
Erasmus+ aims to promote exchange and academic cooperation among all countries worldwide. Under Key Action 1 (Individual Mobility), there is a distinction between program countries and partner countries, as well as between the KA131 program (mobility within program countries + globally) and the KA171 program (mobility to specific Erasmus+ partner countries).
Erasmus+ participants must carry out their international stay in a program or partner country that is neither the country of their home university nor their country of residence during their time at university.
Program countries are EU member states:
Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Cyprus.

For students
Studying Abroad
Would you like to study at one of Europa-Universität Flensburg's many Erasmus+ partner universities worldwide?
Students can apply for a semester abroad, including Erasmus+ funding, via the International Center.
If you secure a spot at a partner university in an EU country, Turkey, Norway, the UK, Albania, or Israel, you will automatically receive an Erasmus+ scholarship.
If you secure a spot at a partner university in another country, you will not automatically receive an Erasmus+ scholarship. However, if Europa-Universität Flensburg has an Erasmus+ cooperation agreement with your partner university and enough funding is available, you can apply for an Erasmus+ scholarship after you have accepted your spot.
-
Erasmus+ scholarships are only available for stays at partner universities with which Europa-Universität Flensburg has an inter-institutional agreement (Erasmus+ cooperation contract).
-
There are no tuition fees at Erasmus+ partner universities.
-
The study abroad period can be for one or two semesters; the minimum duration is two months. It is possible to receive funding several times - up to 12 months in each study period. Students who have already received Erasmus+ funding from Europa-Universität Flensburg for studying abroad will be given lower priority for financial support.
- Students may submit an informal request for an extension of their stay to the International Center (by e-mail) up to 30 days before the end of their study abroad period.
- The student and two universities sign a Learning Agreement to facilitate the recognition (transfer of credits) of courses taken at the partner university. This agreement lists the courses taken and credit points (ECTS points). Upon your return to EUF, you will receive a transcript of records certifying the courses taken and credits earned.
- Europa-Universität Flensburg has an Erasmus+ cooperation agreement with several partner universities in other non-European countries. You can only apply for a scholarship if your partner university is an Erasmus+ partner university (see list).
- You can apply for an Erasmus+ scholarship via the online application portal. All students who have accepted a place at an Erasmus+ partner university will be informed of the application deadline by email from the International Center.
-
Scholarship holders are selected within 3 weeks of the application deadline. The following criteria are taken into account during the selection process:
- The student's qualifications and academic performance to date
- The relevance of the planned stay abroad to the student's current studies
- Language skills necessary to complete the study abroad program
- Willingness to serve as an ambassador for study abroad
In addition to securing your study place, waiving tuition fees, and receiving support from the universities, the Erasmus+ scholarship also provides financial support for your time abroad. The Erasmus+ scholarship consists of several components:
Erasmus+ Internships – also for Graduates
Would you like to complete a full-time internship abroad?
Erasmus+ not only funds internships worldwide during your studies but also within the first 12 months after graduation. The only condition is that the Erasmus+ scholarship must be approved before the end of your studies (before de-registration).
Current internship opportunities are listed on the News website, in the UniNow app (International feed) and on webpages like ErasmusIntern.
- Erasmus+ scholarships can fund both mandatory and voluntary internships.
- The minimum duration is 60 days. Erasmus+ funding can be granted multiple times, with up to 12 months of funding available for each level of study. However, first-time applicants have priority when scholarships are awarded.
- Priority is given to mandatory internships and unpaid internships.
- Internships at EU institutions and other EU bodies, including specialized agencies and organizations that manage EU programs, are not eligible for funding.
- If you are unable to complete a full-time internship due to a disability, chronic illness, or childcare responsibilities, your Erasmus+ internship may be completed part-time with an appropriate justification.
-
Advantages of the Erasmus+ Program:
- Recognition of the work completed abroad
- Support throughout the internship from a contact person at both Europa-Universität Flensburg and the internship organization
- Assistance in preparing for your stay abroad, including the option to participate in a preparatory Erasmus+ intensive language course in lesser-spoken languages
- An EU internship contract between the university, the internship organization, and the student
- You can apply for an extension of your stay up to 30 days before the end of your internship (via email) to the International Office.
The Erasmus+ grant for your stay abroad (scholarship) is made up of several components.
Grants for internships in Europe are currently awarded for 60, 90 or 120 days. Grants for internships outside Europe are currently awarded for 60 days. The funding period can therefore be shorter than the actual stay. The total grant amount will be announced when the grant is awarded.
As soon as you have been accepted for an internship, you can apply for the Erasmus+ scholarship. Your application must be received via the online application portal at least two months before the internship starts. The earlier you submit your application, the better your chances of receiving a scholarship.
We always review applications at the start of each month. We then inform the applicants about their eligibility for Erasmus+ funding.
Exception for teacher training students: If you have applied for Erasmus+ and Lehramt.international (DAAD) at the same time, please inform us by email to erasmus@uni-flensburg.de as soon as you have received an acceptance or rejection from the DAAD. Only then will your Erasmus+ application be reviewed.
Required application documents:
- Learning Agreement for Traineeships (Word template with comments in the margin – document is not barrier-free)
- Transcript of records (1st semester master's students: Please upload your bachelor's degree certificate including grade, instead of the transcript of records)
- Certificate(s) of university enrollment for the entire internship period(if you have them already; graduate internships: current certificate of university enrollment)
- CV
- Declaration of honor (PDF – not barrier-free) to apply for top-ups or funded travel days (if applicable; document cannot be submitted subsequently)
Accident and liability insurance is mandatory for Erasmus+ internships; the insurance can also be concluded after the scholarship has been awarded. If your internship institution provides you with liability or accident insurance, you can also upload the relevant proof to the application portal.
Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) and other short-term mobilities
Are you interested in a short stay in another European country?
Erasmus+ supports participation in Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs). These can include excursions or summer schools that are jointly organized by several European universities. Typically, several EUF students participate in a BIP at the same time. Individual short-term stays (short-term blended mobilities) can also be supported with an Erasmus+ scholarship, for example, as part of summer schools or language courses.
You can find current opportunities in the News section, on the UniNow app (International Feed), and in the Summer Schools in Europe database.
- The mobility consists of a short-term stay abroad (in-person phase, 5-30 days) and at least one online phase before, during, and/or after the stay. No Erasmus+ grant is provided for the online phase(s).
- The in-person phase takes place at an Erasmus+ partner university of EUF in one of the following countries: EU member states, Norway, or Turkey.
- No tuition fees are charged by the partner university for participation.
- By participating in a BIP or other short-term stay, you will earn at least 3 ECTS credits. Ideally, these credits will be recognized as part of your studies at EUF. If recognition is not possible, you may still participate voluntarily. Recognition must be discussed with EUF in advance and, after receiving the Erasmus+ grant, formalized in an individual Learning Agreement. Upon your return, a Transcript of Records will be issued, certifying the completed course and the awarded ECTS credits. You can use these documents to apply for recognition.
- Repeated funding through Erasmus+ is possible, with up to 12 months of funding available for each level of study; however, first-time applicants are given priority when scholarships are awarded.
- Blended Intensive Programs can also take place at EUF. In this case, EUF participants do not receive Erasmus+ funding, as they are not traveling abroad.
Your application must be received via the online application portal at least two months before the first part of the BIP/short-term mobility. We always review applications at the start of each month. We then inform the applicants about their eligibility for Erasmus+ funding. For Blended Intensive Programmes organized by EUF lecturers, later deadlines may apply.
Required application documents:
- Transcript of records (not required for BIPs organized by EUF lecturers; 1st semester master's students: Please upload your bachelor's degree certificate including grade, instead of the transcript of records)
- CV (not required for BIPs organized by EUF lecturers)
- Certificate(s) of university enrollment for the entire BIP period (if you have them already)
- Declaration of honor (PDF – not barrier-free) to apply for top-ups or funded travel days (if applicable)
The application must be submitted via the online application portal.

For doctoral students
Erasmus+ Funding Opportunities for Doctoral Students
Are you interested in attending a workshop abroad, conducting research for your dissertation on-site, improving your language skills and expanding your international research network, or teaching at an EUF partner university?
The Erasmus+ program offers various opportunities to financially support your stay abroad at universities and other institutions (e.g., companies, research institutions) worldwide.
Doctoral students can participate in Erasmus+ long-term and short-term stays (excluding teaching activities). Postdoctoral researchers can be funded within 12 months of completing their doctorate, provided that the funding application was approved while they were still enrolled as doctoral students.
Doctoral students with an employment contract at Europa-Universität Flensburg can also take part in an Erasmus+ teaching mobility and/or a staff mobility for training and professional development.
Participation in conferences cannot be funded.
The duration of the stay is 5-30 days. The stay abroad can optionally be combined with an online component. No Erasmus+ grant is provided for any online phase.
No tuition fees may be charged during Erasmus+ stays at (partner) universities.
The mobility may be self-organized or, alternatively, it may take place within the framework of a Blended Intensive Program (BIP). Current calls for applications can be found in the News section, on the UniNow app (international feed), and in the Summer Schools in Europe database.
Erasmus+ funding to finance this type of stay abroad includes several components:
- The duration of the stay is 60 days to 12 months. The stay abroad can optionally be combined with an online component. No Erasmus+ grant is provided for any possible online phase.
- No tuition fees may be charged during Erasmus+ stays at (partner) universities.
- The funding conditions for self-organized research stays are identical to those for an Erasmus+ internship.
- If you wish to study for a semester at one of EUF's Erasmus+ partner universities, please contact us before submitting a funding application. The funding conditions are the same as for Erasmus+ study.
- As soon as your planned stay abroad has been confirmed by your EUF supervisor and the host institution, you can apply for Erasmus+ funding. The application must be submitted at least one month before the planned mobility. The earlier an application is submitted, the higher the chances of approval. Doctoral students who have already received Erasmus+ funding from Europa-Universität Flensburg will be given lower priority for financial support.
- Required application documents:
- Certificate(s) of university enrollment for the entire stay abroad (if you have them already) or alternative proof
- Learning Agreement "Student Mobility for Traineeships" (Word template with comments in the margin – document is not barrier-free; if you plan to take part in a Blended Intensive Programme, please contact the International Center first and then create an Online Learning Agreement)
- Declaration of honor (PDF – not barrier-free) to apply for top-ups or funded travel days (if applicable)
Depending on the type of mobility, you may be required to have health, accident and liability insurance; insurance can also be taken out after the scholarship has been approved. If you are insured through the receiving institution, you can upload the relevant proof in the application portal.

Other mobility formats: Blended Intensive Programmes
Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes can fund short stays abroad for students (BA, MA, PhD) and university staff in all disciplines, such as excursions or summer schools. Teaching staff who teach abroad during a BIP can also receive funding. A cross-country overview of some past and planned BIPs can be found on the ErasmusBIP website.
Feel free to contact us if you're interested in arranging a BIP.
A BIP consists of a short group mobility (= in-person phase), combined with one or more online phases. The program involves at least three universities from different European countries (excluding the UK and Switzerland). The program is jointly designed and coordinated by the teaching staff of the participating universities.
- Option A: The in-person phase takes place at EUF. EUF participants, EUF teaching staff, as well as participants and possibly teaching staff from abroad, are involved in the BIP.
- Option B: The in-person phase takes place at a partner university. EUF participants and possibly EUF teaching staff travel abroad, where they meet with participants and possibly teaching staff from all partner universities involved in the BIP.
- In addition to EUF, at least 2 universities from 2 other Erasmus+ program countries must be involved in the BIP (i.e., EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey).
- It must include a joint in-person phase (5-30 days) and at least one online phase (before, during, or after the in-person phase).
- The in-person phase must take place at one of the participating universities, to which the other universities send participants.
- There must be at least 10 traveling participants (students and/or university staff); the number of participants per university may vary. Some BIPs require at least 15 participants. Teaching staff are not counted, but may receive funding.
- Students earn at least 3 ECTS credits for participating in a BIP.
- Option A (in-person phase at EUF): EUF receives Erasmus+ funding (so-called OS funds/Organizational Support), which can be used for personnel costs, materials, premises, communication, activities, catering, translations/interpreting, and preparatory trips. The OS funds depend on the number of traveling participants: €400 per person, up to a maximum of €8,000. Traveling participants receive an Erasmus+ grant for their stay at EUF. EUF participants do not receive Erasmus+ funding.
- Option B (in-person phase at a partner university): EUF participants (BA and MA students, doctoral candidates, staff) and EUF teaching staff receive Erasmus+ funding (daily and travel allowances, as well as additional grants if applicable).
- Request funding possibility
- If you are planning a BIP and have already found interested partner universities, contact the International Center (IC) as early as possible to check the Erasmus+ funding options.
- Detailed planning
