Italy and Germany in the process of democratic regression. An analysis of the state of their democratic institutions, their socio-economic problems and their joint capacity to act in Europe

Villa Vigoni Talk

The aim of the discussion is to analyse German-Italian relations against the backdrop of the spread of authoritarian populism in Europe. It will analyse to what extent Italy and Germany are affected by this phenomenon or to what extent they prove to be robust democracies that together can contribute to successfully combating democratic regression (i.e. a regressive development towards autocracies).

The project allows the participation of 10 professors. In addition, 6 young scientists will be involved, who can apply to participate in the conference via a call in the first quarter of 2025.

Description

In this discussion, we will focus mainly, although not exclusively, on the problem of growing socio-economic inequality as a possible cause of authoritarian populism. We will look at how the two countries can be localised on this problem dimension, what alternative explanations there are for populism and regression and what possible (bilateral) measures against regressive tendencies can be outlined.
