Discussion Series Doctoral Studies

The discussion series “Doctorate - complex and differentiated” offers the opportunity to exchange ideas with experts on various development paths as well as on conditions for success and opportunity structures in the doctoral phase and after the doctorate. The discussion series is aimed in particular at doctoral candidates

On June 10, 2025 from 14:00 to 15:30, we invite you to a discussion with Professor Dr. Michelle Witen.

Michelle Witen, Jr Professor of English and Irish Literature and Director of the Centre for Irish Studies, shares her experiences during her doctoral studies (UK, University of Oxford).

In the discussion series “Doctorates - complex and differentiated”, we address the question of how and whether doctorates that have been started are completed. With regard to diversity, little is known about different realities of life in the doctoral phase and the research situation is confusing. In this series of talks, we invite EUF researchers to look back on their doctoral phase and report on the conditions for success, opportunity and support structures, delays, crises and progress during the doctoral process. From your perspective, what factors influenced the completion of the doctoral project? In addition to discussing the content of the various factors for doctoral success, the focus will also be on supporting conducive relationships and structures, motivation and feedback as well as new impulses and support in this career phase.

We look forward to your participation!

Research centers for promoting early-stage researchers

The three flagship research centers at Europa-Universität Flensburg—the Center for Education, Teaching, School, and Socialization Research (ZeBUSS), the Interdisciplinary Centre for European Studies (ICES), and the Center for Research on Sustainability and Transformation Research (CREST) —represent, expand, and deepen the university's core research areas 1) education and socialization research, 2) interdisciplinary European studies, and 3) environmental sciences and sustainable development.

The qualification programs offered by the profile-building research centers at Europa-Universität Flensburg — ZeBUSS, ICES, and CREST — provide researchers in qualification phases with opportunities to sharpen their academic profiles.

The centers aim to promote research activities and early-career researchers and to strengthen national and international networking among EUF scholars.

Continous Professional Development Hochschuldidaktik

The modular higher education didactics certificate program "ReflActive Teaching" offers all lectures at the EUF the opportunity to engage with questions regarding traditions, innovations, and routines in teaching across various formats, to design teaching and learning processes with a student-centered approach, and to further develop their own teaching competencies.

Lectures can either participate in individual workshops from the higher education didactics training program or, if interested, enroll in the full "ReflActive Teaching" certificate program and earn a Higher Education Didactics Certificate. The certificate program is modular in structure, comprises 180 working units, and complies with the recommendations of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Hochschuldidaktik (dghd), by which it is officially recognized.
