The habilitation is formal proof of the ability to independently represent an academic subject or subject area (habilitation subject) in research and teaching (teaching qualification).
After successful completion of the habilitation procedure, the habilitated person may use the degree Doktor*in habilitata*habilitatus (Dr. habil.). The award of the teaching authorization is accompanied by the right to use the title Privatdozent*in (PD).
The following page provides an overview and initial information on habilitation at Europa-Universität Flensburg.
The current versions of the habilitation regulations of the three faculties can be found under "Documents".
Habilitation subject
A habilitation is possible in a subject or subject area that is represented by a full-time professor at one of the three faculties of Europa-Universität Flensburg.
An overview of currently possible habilitation subjects at the Europa-Universität Flensburg can be found on the pages of the respective faculties
Habilitation procedure
The habilitation procedure at the Europa-Universität Flensburg is described below. As the application to open the procedure is only submitted after the habilitation thesis has been completed, please contact the relevant dean's office at an early stage to check the admission requirements and clarify any other questions.
Application for admission to the habilitation procedure
- Applications must be submitted to the respective Dean's Office.
- A list of documents to be submitted (written Habilitation thesis etc.) can be found in the Habilitation regulations
Review of the written habilitation thesis
- The expert reports are appointed by the habilitation committee.
- The reports are available for inspection for four weeks (at least two weeks during the lecture period).
- On the basis of the reviews, the committee decides whether to accept or reject the written habilitation thesis.
Colloquium
- Once the written habilitation thesis has been accepted, the oral habilitation examination takes the form of a presentation followed by a discussion (colloquium).
- As a rule, the committee selects a lecture topic from suggestions made by the habilitating researchers.
- Immediately after the colloquium, the committee announces its decision on the acceptance or rejection of the oral habilitation examination.
Assessment of the habilitation (Dr. habil.)
- Once all habilitation work has been completed, the committee decides on the successful completion of the habilitation procedure.
- This is associated with the right to use the degree of doctor with the addition habilitata or habilitatus (Dr. habil.).
Authorization to teach (PD) and inaugural lecture
- An application for authorization to teach can be submitted. This is accompanied by the right to use the academic title Privatdozent*in (PD).
- Following the conferral of the teaching authorization (by the University President and the Faculty), a public inaugural lecture shall be held.
- Privatdozent*innen are authorized and obliged to teach at Europa-Universität Flensburg.
Publication of the habilitation thesis
- The habilitation thesis should be made available to the academic public in an appropriate manner within three years of the end of the procedure.
Habilitation thesis
The written habilitation thesis can be submitted in the form of a monograph or as a collection of several scientific articles published or accepted for publication, either alone or jointly, supplemented by a framework text (cumulative habilitation thesis).
The habilitation thesis must represent a significant advance in scientific knowledge for the subject.
Colloquium
Once the written habilitation thesis has been accepted, the oral habilitation thesis takes the form of a presentation followed by a discussion (colloquium).
Habilitation candidates propose lecture topics to the committee, from which it usually selects one.
The lecture should deal with a problem from the habilitation subject in such a way that colleagues from outside the subject can also form an opinion, demonstrate the habilitation candidate's pedagogical and didactic skills and show that the habilitation candidate is able to present scientific issues in university teaching in an appropriate, understandable, critical and logically comprehensible manner.
The exact duration of the lecture and colloquium as a whole is specified in the respective habilitation regulations of the faculty.
