Application documents
With your application please include:
- Cover letter
- Presentation of your doctoral project (exposé) in German or English
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form
- Copy of university degree certificates (BA&MA)
- Reviews from two university lecturers (see "Reviews" for details)
- Transcripts of records (BA&MA)
- Proof of income, if applicable (see §§ 7, 8 StpO)
Personal documents that change the payment status (e.g. birth certificate(s) of dependent children) must only be submitted in the original to the office of the committee secretary (DUB 207) after successful application.
The exposé should contain the following elements:
- Topic/working title for the dissertation
- Subject area and field of work (e.g. "Mathematics didactics, didactics of geometry secondary level l")
- Expected total duration of the dissertation including preparatory work, desired funding period
The maximum funding period is three years. Under special circumstances (§2 no. 2 StpO), the awarding committee may approve a fourth year of funding. - Summary of the overall project/abstract (maximum 15 lines).
The summary serves as an introduction to your project for the interdisciplinary scholarship committee. Please ensure brevity and comprehensibility for researchers from other disciplines. - Current state of research
Neither an extensive literature review nor an exploration of the entire field of research is expected here, but rather a brief description of the research context or research discourse in which your project is situated and is likely to bring about a scientific innovation. - Preliminary work
These may, for example, have been written as final theses, work on the dissertation before submitting the application or preliminary work as part of a project. - Goals
Please provide a brief description of the scientific results you are aiming to achieve with your dissertation and, if appropriate, which non-scientific results, e.g. social-political or relevant to a specific educational practice, can be expected. - Research question(s) and methodological approach
This section should be a central aspect of your exposé: This may include which research design will be used (e.g. which hypotheses will be tested or is an exploratory study intended and how will this be justified), but also which methods will be used and when, e.g. methods of empirical social research, development of secondary sources, statistical calculation methods or other). - Possible embedding in a larger research context
The dissertation must be an independent scientific achievement; nevertheless, it can be part of a larger third-party funded project or another institutionalized scientific context. - Timetable and roughly outlined work program
It is advisable to provide an overview of the entire project and a plan for the funding period applied for - no more than 3 years in total - in a schematic representation. In addition, you should provide an overview of the entire research program up to the completion of the dissertation and a more detailed description of the part that falls within the funding period applied for.
The first review required for the application must be written by the supervising university lecturer ("Hochschullehrer*in" according to § 13 para. 1 no. 1 HSG) of the EUF. Second reviews can also be written by professors from other universities/research institutions.
The reviewers are asked to comment in particular on the scientific quality and the work program of the doctoral project. The "Guidelines for the preparation of reviews" (German only) serve as a further guide.

The scholarship is initially granted for one year and can in principle be extended for a further year.
This application must be accompanied by:
- Comparison with the work plan submitted with the initial application
- Report on the status of the research project and further time planning
- Statement from the first supervisor on the status of the project

If, after two years of funding, it is clear that completion of the project will be ensured with a second extension, this can be applied for in the same way as the first extension.
For this purpose, an explicit statement from the first supervisor about the feasibility of the submitted timetable is required in addition to the documents of the 1st extension application.
Continued extension for one year beyond the maximum funding period of three years is possible in the case of proven parental or care periods as well as in the case of a disability (§ 2 Para. 1 SGB IX) or a serious chronic illness (hardship regulation in accordance with § 2 Para. 2 StpO).
