Cultural Memory in African American Contemporary Film

"The concept of memory has a great impact on what a society understands as its history and is thus crucial to the formation of cultural identity. The question which parts of the past are remembered within a society and secured in its history is especially important with regard to marginalized groups, since they are often faced with an oblivion of their perspective and the challenges of securing traumatic memories within the narratives they tell themselves. The PhD thesis introduced in the following is concerned with the cultural memory of African Americans and how their –partly highly traumatic –past experiences are secured within contemporary narratives."
